The year was 2018 and I was in a rut. I was in a decent job teaching high school and even got my masters to eventually advance into a leadership role, but my heart truly was not in it.
That year I tried out a different approach to teaching by introducing “Genius Hour” on our Fridays. Genius Hour basically allowed the students at my high school to follow a deep-down passion that they may not have had time to pursue. Remember high school? We broke away from the scheduled curriculum and allowed them structured time to pursue a passion project like starting a podcast, learn how to play guitar, learn how to paint, etc. While my students pursued their passions, I took it upon myself to pursue my own.
My Aviation Calling
After 6 years of teaching, I left it all behind to start a new career path as an airline pilot. My love for aviation finally brought me to making one of the toughest decisions of my life. A fresh start, a do-over, the reset button. This is what it felt like walking into my flight school classroom for the first time. I knew this was exactly what I was looking for. Now instead of giving out homework, I was receiving it and truly enjoyed the learning process. I am still in school and currently working on my instrument rating and becoming a future airline pilot.
My Other Passions
This HUGE step towards going after my dreams as lead me to stop settling and start following all my passions. This blog is the start of my new path and serves as a check and balance with regard to my process. My documentation of my thoughts and advice will hopefully help anyone else out with stepping outside of their comfort zone. Here is a list of passions and aspirations I plan to achieve:
- Become the best Dad I can be for my two wonderful kids
Start a blog
- Start a business
- Become a commercial pilot
It’s Not About Money or Fame
My family is the primary motivation for everything I do, and you’re going to hear me mention them all over the blog. My wife Katy, and I have two kids — Luke, a boy, and Claire, a girl, and are my everything. My number one passion is to be the best dad I can be. I want them all to know that this is mainly for them.
